TEA to Takeover Because of Protests
Commissioner Mike Morath looking confused at a public meeting.
We have a serious problem. The Texas Education Agency literally wants to use a single student walkout as reason to takeover a district. This is now not only about quality of education or success of the students. This is a further attempt to ‘takeover’ a district and remove elected trustees to dismantle the public education system in Texas to benefit private business owners. There is no other way to say it, these are dictatorial practices.
The TEA commission is now ‘investigating’ districts for ‘encouraging’ student protests. What or how constitutes ‘encouraging’ is one question. But the problem we have here is that this all driven by ‘inappropriate political activism’ as deemed by Greg Abbott. So now Greg Abbott wants to make the call for US, the citizens, about what is and isn’t appropriate. Presumably if kids were walking out to protest someone taking away wheelchair ramps, he would be fine with it.
Below is a link to their guidance they issued in conjunction with their displeasure of a walkout where students were expressing their First Amendment rights:
They are now threatening not only takeover of an entire district (presumably Austin in this case), but also threatening to revoke teacher licensure. This is absolutely abhorrent to threaten teachers with. Because we all know that the state will decide what they want to push their charter school agenda. Teachers are at risk of losing their jobs for the sake of a 5 second sound bite. This is your elected governor and TEA commissioner at work.
